Eric Cantor Resigning from Congress August 18th

 by: Bob Cull

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) — who lost in a stunning primary defeat to Tea Party favorite Dave Brat in June — apparently can’t wait to get to work as a lobbyist. Towards that end, he announced shortly after his farewell speech as House Majority Leader, that he resigns from Congress, and is leaving on August 18.

Cantor told the Richmond Times Dispatch on Thursday afternoon.
I want to make sure that the constituents in the 7th District will have a voice in what will be a very consequential lame-duck session.
Cantor has asked Governor Terry McAuliffe to call a special election that coincides with the general election on November 4 to replace him in the House so that his successor can take office immediately rather than having to wait until January to be seated.

Cantor said in his farewell address:
“Walking into this building and walking onto this floor is something that excited me every day since I was first elected to Congress. Not one of us should ever take for granted the awesome honor and responsibility we have to serve our fellow Americans.”

While the former Majority Leader has said that he has no immediate plans Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia said that it is “highly probable that he has a very lucrative deal in the works.”
Sabato said.

“The Republicans are nearly guaranteed to retain control of the House of Representatives after November, and a former Majority Leader with good ties to most of his colleagues is a very valuable commodity.”

Cantor affirmed Sabato’s assessment.
“My wife and I are sort of going to make those kind of decisions, and I do think they are best made as private citizens.  But I’m looking forward to being a very active member in that democratic system and advocate for the cause that I believe in.”
