Wisconsin Republican Lies: Same Sex Marriages Will Lead to Incestuous Marriages

 by: Rika Christensen

Karen Mueller, a Wisconsin Republican congressional candidate claims that marriage equality will lead to siblings marrying each other, because if gays and lesbians can do it, then obviously, siblings should be able to, too.

Right?

Karen Mueller used the same slippery slope argument that many marriage equality opponents use, that legalizing same-sex marriage will lead to all sorts of horrible things, including people marrying their siblings, and worse, their dogs.

She also trotted out the ridiculous argument that bans on same-sex marriage aren’t discriminatory, because gays and lesbians can still get married. Many anti-equality morons say this, claiming that the only way it would be discrimination would be if gays and lesbians couldn’t marry anybody.

Of course they can get married, they just can’t marry who they love, like the rest of us. It means that they can’t get things, like survivor’s benefits, that the rest of us take so for granted. So, in order to actually, officially get married, they have to marry someone they don’t, and can’t, love the way that we straight people love our partners.

She did acknowledge that, but in a manner that suggests that’s not a problem. Mueller also said:

“We’ve got, for instance, two sisters, and these two sisters want to get married. They love each other. They are committed to each other. They want to spend the rest of their life together.”

Mueller said that lawyers could argue that they simply would do away with state laws, the same way they did with sodomy laws (because sodomy laws were eminently enforceable, anyway). That, to her, reveals the truth about what’s going on — which is likely that people will eventually be able to commit all kinds of “sin,” and have it sanctioned by law.

It’s not surprising that Mueller bring this up, because she’s also a strong opponent of the ACA. She believes that the ACA’s mandates (specifically, the contraception mandate) take away people’s and employers’ choices regarding providing contraception. She also thinks it takes away people’s choices regarding whether to fund abortion.

All this woman is doing is spreading fear, which is what Republicans do best. Unfortunately for her, the facts of the situation have a liberal bias. Prohibiting marriage equality is discrimination. The Supreme Court affirmed that when they struck down DOMA and Prop 8. Even Sen. Orrin Hatch has said that marriage equality will become the law of the land. The religious right and the GOP need to give this up, including the lies and the fear-mongering.
